Lip fillers have established themselves as a staple treatment in the aesthetic industry, providing a non-surgical solution for enhancing lip volume and shape. While the treatment is considered safe and minimally invasive, as with most cosmetic treatments, it can cause some temporary side effects, namely swelling.
Fortunately, with the proper lip filler aftercare, this can be minimised, reducing discomfort so your clients can enjoy their results faster. Here are Two Face’s top ten essential aftercare tips for lip injections.
What are Lip Fillers?
Lip fillers are injectable dermal fillers designed to enhance the volume, shape, and symmetry of the lips. The most commonly used substance in lip fillers is hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring substance that helps retain moisture and add plumpness.
When administered by a qualified practitioner, lip fillers can:
- Define the lip border
- Add volume to thin lips
- Correct asymmetry
- Smooth out fine lines around the mouth
Why do Lips Swell after Fillers?
After undergoing a lip filler treatment, your body goes through its natural healing process due to the minor trauma caused by the needle. The injection and hyaluronic acid (HA) trigger a mild inflammatory reaction, which causes temporary puffiness, tenderness, redness, and sometimes bruising.
This is a common occurrence with injectables, and the symptoms subside after a few days. However, following proper aftercare for lip filler can significantly reduce the duration and intensity of swelling.
Lip Filler Aftercare Tips:
-
Avoid touching or pressing the lips
While it may be tempting to touch your new lips after they’ve been done, this can irritate the tissue and increase the inflammation. Allow the filler time to settle into its desired shape, as any pressure can lead to distorted results. -
Avoid NSAIDS immediately after treatment
Any blood-thinning painkillers, such as ibuprofen or aspirin, can increase the risk of swelling and bruising. If you need pain relief, please consult your practitioner or a pharmacist for further guidance. -
Apply a cold compress
Use a clean, cold compress or ice pack wrapped in a cloth. Apply gently to the lips for 10–15 minutes at a time to reduce swelling and soothe the area. -
Stay hydrated
Hydration is vital, especially after undergoing treatment. Drinking plenty of water can support the effects of the hyaluronic acid (HA) and help your body heal more efficiently. -
Sleep with your head elevated
Sleep with your head elevated for the first 1–2 nights to minimise fluid retention and reduce morning swelling. -
Avoid intense workouts
Strenuous activity can increase blood flow to the face, worsening swelling and bruising, which can negatively impact the healing process. Avoid any high-intensity workouts for at least 24-48 hours. -
Avoid alcohol and smoking
Smoking and drinking should be avoided for at least 48 hours post-treatment. Alcohol acts as a blood thinner and can increase bruising and swelling, while smoking increases the risk of infection, which could lead to further complications. -
Avoid wearing make-up on the lips
To reduce the risk of infection at the injection site, avoid applying lip balm, lipstick, or any other cosmetic product to the lips. -
Avoid hot drinks and spicy foods
For the first 24 hours, avoid anything that could increase blood flow to your lips, including hot beverages, spicy meals, and alcohol. -
Monitor for unusual symptoms
While some swelling is normal, if you experience severe pain, uneven swelling, or signs of infection, please contact your practitioner or healthcare provider immediately.
